What is Real Bia?
Firstly for anyone who doesn’t understand Gaeilge, bia = food. Real Bia = Real food. Real Bia will have an event held in Aclaí, once every month in which a speaker will come and discuss food such as farmers, baristas, chefs, cooks, butchers and just general food lovers. We will not only be discussing food but some of the workshops will cover growing and planting our own food, cooking food, eating food together, eating food in different ways from different cultures (with your hand), learning how to make the perfect coffee and where to get the best produced food. The cost for the workshop is €10. It's a good excuse for food lovers to come together and eat some good real food.
It is said that we can only live for 21 days without food. Food is something we cannot live without so learning how to cook, learning about how to grow food and socialising with people who have a similar mindset can only be a positive. It has come to my attention that a lot of people have lost their passion for food. I myself find that I end up rushing to the supermarket and mindlessly picking up a quick fix meal but things have changed and I try to cook the majority of my meals with good whole unprocessed foods from local farmers everyday. I think people have gotten very caught up in the fitness industry and now everything needs to be fast. 10 minute meals. I’m all for cooking a quick omelette for lunch but I think the importance of sitting down with some friends and family to enjoy a meal with plenty of time to spare is healthier than any 10 minute salad from a restaurant. We have really lost the social aspect of sitting down to enjoy a dinner with our family. When was the last time you sat down and enjoyed a healthy meal with your family or friends without looking at the clock?
The first Real Bia workshop.
In our very first Real Bia workshop we will have a guest Laura Laffan who has been growing her own sustainable fruits, vegetables and herbs for years. She will show us how to to plant vegetable and herb seeds, and every person will be taking away one pot of planted seeds to grow at home. Afterwards, we will learn how to eat a Sri Lankan curry with our hand and of course enjoy eating it. This is a great way to learn how other cultures eat their food and it will be an unbelievably tasty curry.
