Gym Jam, 20 July 2019, 2pm-late
Gym Jam 2019 is nearly upon us, and you will find all of the essential information about the event right here!
Who’s Behind the Gym Jam?
Gym Jam was started in 2018 by Alex Sampson and Ainle Ó Cairealláin as a vehicle to raise money for a great cause and also bring people together for a great night of music, entertainment, and dance in the unusual setting of a strength and conditioning facility. Alex did a recent interview with the Evening Echo, and describes it like this:
“My involvement in Gym Jam came about through training at ACLAÍ, the gym that will host the event. One day, myself and Ainle (owner of ACLAÍ) were training when the topic of having a party in the gym came up and I looked around the room and was able to instantly visualize it. We decided it would be a great idea to have a party there as a fundraiser for anyone we knew who needed it and shortly after, one of the coaches at ACLAÍ ended up qualifying for the Wheelchair Rugby World Championships in Sydney and couldn’t get funding, so that was all we needed to get going. We put it all together and raised over €5,000 for him. This year we are fundraising for the Palestine Community Gym project and have a goal of €30,000 to raise overall which we hope to make a sizeable dent in with the Gym Jam.”
The Gym Jam Back Story
The Gym Jam is a fundraising event to open the Palestine Community Gym in the Aida Refugee Camp in the West Bank, which is a project that we have been involved in since August 2018. After 2 trips to Palestine last year, this is a project that we are very passionate about getting across the line, and we need to raise €30000 to make it happen. Life in a Palestinian refugee camp has many negative side effects, including high levels of diabetes, hypertension, and mental health issues. However, this project is about more than just building a gym. In a recent interview with the Middle East Monitor, Ainle described it like this:
“So when people ask why a gym, I say it’s about getting around the restrictions that people have had placed on them unjustly. It’s about being able to find a gap in the walls that the Palestinians have wrapped around them, physically or otherwise. When Israel is trying to block everything that’s of benefit, trying to squeeze them until life just isn’t worth it anymore, the project is a way of ensuring this doesn’t happen.”
