Anyone who really knows me knows it’s quite hard to contact me because I don’t own a mobile phone.  Although I don’t own have a mobile phone I do have a laptop, ipad and other forms of technology. I had always been careless with phones and when I broke my last phone around 6 months ago I decided I didn’t want to replace it.

When I had a phone I would wake up in the morning and mindlessly look at the screen for over an hour, flicking through facebook, snapchat and other apps on my phone. Afterwards I would realise that I had just wasted an hour of my life and that I had been doing this on a constant basis.

My life without a phone has less distractions, I don’t spend my day checking my phone to see if I got a snapchat or if someone liked my photo on facebook. People ask me how I contact my friends and family, I like to spend as much time as I can with my friends and family in person instead of sending them a mindless text. I like to skype and send letters to my closest friends. Some of my friends joke that I should get my own carrier pigeon to send letters.

Some things I have noticed without a phone are that a lot of people are consumed with their phones. I get on the bus and I take a look around and most of the people are on their phones. There’s no human contact. My most hated time seeing people on their phones is when there is a couple on a date in a restaurant or a group of friends meeting up for some food. I take a quick look around the restaurant and the people might as well not be there at all. I find it highly disrespectful and rude when I have lunch with someone or have a chat and they take out their phones. What have we become?. We can’t leave our phones unattended for a brief period.

I don’t expect everyone to start living without their phones but I do expect people to have certain times when they use their phones. Take a weekend off or even a few hours a day. Leave your phone at home when you go out to meet your friends. Put your phone into your bag when you’re on public transport and have a chat with someone next to you.

Phones are obviously an amazing piece of technology, for me in the present moment I am happy without one. If you are obsessed with your phone I would recommend taking a break from it, even if it is just for a few hours. Go meet some friends or just go for a walk yourself and enjoy the silence without the annoying buzzing sound in your pocket.

Albert Einstein was right… “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.”
