We love Dr. Maya Angelou here at ACLAÍ, and it is with sadness that we learned of her recent passing. We didn’t know her personally, but it seems she had a very fulfilling life, and certainly inspired millions to lead better and more peaceful lives. Dr Angelou published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and several books of poetry, and was credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning more than 50 years. She was active in the Civil Rights movement, and worked with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X.

Here are some of the messages we at ACLAÍ think she would give you if she were your life coach.

1. ‘Take up the battle. Its Yours, take it up!’

Have the courage to face your problems and get to work on solving them. We only have 1 life, so its worth having a good crack at it.

2. ‘Just Do Right’

When you are in between two minds, and find it hard to make a decision, you already know which decision is the right one. Even though it may not be profitable or expedient, you know which one is right.

3. ‘If you Teach, You have to Live Your Teaching’

We take this one very literally at ACLAÍ. We help our clients be fit and healthy, and we do our very best to be the same ourselves. Valuable words from the good Dr.!

4. ‘Try to be the best human being you can be’

Sometimes we may fail at this one, but what counts is that we keep on trying to be the best we can in every facet of our lives. At home, at work, in our communities, with friends……

5. ‘Be part of the 1%’

If 1% of the world no longer complained, Dr. Angelou feels like the world would be a much improved place. It seems like a worthy challenge to be a part of that 1%.

6. ‘Have enough courage to care for each other’

A compassionate hand on the shoulder or a listening ear can go a long way to easing another persons burden. Maybe we often feel that we are ‘too busy’ to find the time for others. Those who have the courage to reach out will make great connections with people.

7. ‘Laugh More Frequently’

This is one that we can all benefit from. The benefits of laughing are widespread, but try not to think about it too much. Just do it as they say!

8. ‘Walk as if you have oil wells pumping in your living room!’

This is a line taken from the poem ‘And Still I Rise’ (below). Considering the tough times Dr Angelou came through during the civil rights movement and in per personal life, we feel that we can all follow her lead on this one. Walk with genuine confidence even when the chips are down.
