310512_10151233898149610_126283246_n Why did you start training with Ainle?

Since starting running about 2 ½ years ago I did almost no stretching, strength or other exercises other than just running. As it was early in the running calendar I was interested in giving a go.

What were your training goals (i.e. why are you training with Ainle)?

My goal is to run a good marathon in Berlin in Sept and to run a good time in Ballycotton 10 as an interim goal.

Did you achieve your goals?

One of my interim goals was a good time in Ballycotton 10. I achieved that. Much closer to the goal now.

What is your overall feeling about training with Ainle

I feel that my training with Ainle has made me much stronger runner, which is what I wanted. This has resulted in better sessions where I felt like I was running with a new bounce.

Describe what makes you happiest about training here (nutrition/ training sessions/ encouragement/ programs/ results etc etc)

Ainle is constantly looking it improve his own training and passes these lessons onto his client. He has taught me much about proper recovery. He is also a wealth of knowledge about nutrition.

Describe one or two of the most important benefits you’ve received by training with Ainle.

Recovery with heart rate variability. I have used resting HR as a measure for sometime but it does not tell you that you are getting run down only that you are. I am no longer afraid to take rest days.

Proper use of stretching where I need it is also a key takeaway I got from the course. I used a the grid roller before the course but now I know many other painful ways to use it to my benefit J

What are your first impressions of the facilities at the gym?

I have never seen a gym so well stocked with equipment. Ainle is clearly an equipment junkie but everything has a purpose and he put it to great use. Most gym’s consist of 10-15 treadmills and little else. I only wish the gym that I am a member of also had some of the goodies that Ainle has.

Do you feel that you got a service that is unique or hard to come by elsewhere by training with Ainle? If so, why?

The service that Ainle gives is certainly unique in Cork and is reflected by his clientele being at the sharp end of race results.

Would you recommend others to train with Ainle? Why?

Defiantly. If it is either as on a 1-to-1 basis or part of a class you are sure to get great benefit like I have.

Is there anything you would like to add?

Even with a poor month running training during the program with sickness I still managed to achieve my race goals. Last year I was sick for a similar time. It resulted in my 10 mile time disapproving by 3 mins where this year it improved by 3 mins. I put this down to the training with Ainle alone.

Marathon Winner Shares his Experience

cork-city-marathon-m-herlihy-09-winner I have been working with 2009 Cork Marathon winner Michael Herlihy in the gym for the past few months to help his get over a nagging hip injury and get ready for the 2013 season. As with all my clients, I asked Michael to fill in our Client Feedback sheet. I usually post the feedback that I get on the Testimonials page (here), but thought that this one deserves a post by itself!

Michael has been working solidly in the gym and has made some great progress. The combination of commitment, hard work, and a good program really is yielding a healthy set of results. A shout out here must go to Patrick Hanley, Physiotherapist, who has also helped Michael along the road to recovery. You can check out Patrick Hanley’s website and contact details at www.avondhuphysio.ie. I have been to see Pa myself on several occasions and can tell you that he is a top class physic.

Anyway, here’s what Michael had to say about our training!

Why did you start training with Ainle?

“I started training with Ainle because he has all the best characteristics of a good coach. He can listen and also relate his own experiences in sport to his clients no matter what sport they’re in. He also has a comprehensive sports science education background which not only gives him an understanding of the science behind all injury rehab and training programs but also allows him to be dynamic in finding ways to individualise a persons training. I came to him fairly badly injured and badly in need of some strength training. Ainle’s’ own broad experience and education in sport was reassuring to me in knowing that he would be able to apply his knowledge to my particular situation in my specific sport to help me achieve my unique goals in my sport.

 What were your training goals?

My training goal was to rehab my injury and develop a good level of strength for when I started to run again properly.  I continue to work with Ainle to continue increasing my strength and achieve more goals in the long term. I rely on him to help me identify weaknesses to both prevent injury and increase performance.

 Did you achieve your goals?

I have achieved some of my goals and will continue to work with Ainle to achieve more goals in the future. A runner like me is always a work in progress. As a marathon runner with a high volume of training I constantly need to have a good level of structural strength to see me across 26.2 miles of the race I’m running. Ainle’s comprehensive knowledge has and I am confident will in the future continue to help me to develop my performance goals to achieve more marathon wins into the future.

What is your overall feeling about training with Ainle?

I have been very happy to have Ainle helping me with my training as he gives excellent one-on-one instruction, encouragement and advice on all elements of training which are needed by any athlete from Nutrition to strength and conditioning to the broader aspects of programme management.

Describe what makes you happiest about training here

I am happiest training with Ainle because of the overall comprehensive approach taken to leaving no stone unturned to sorting out my problem. When I need the encouragement its there to get me back on track on the program. You get an overall feeling that everything that can be done is being done to achieve your goals with Ainle working with you. I am looking forward to being back training fully and working with Ainle to achieving some bigger running goals in the future. Since I’ve only started with my marathon career, I want to move forward and improve my marathon PB from when I won the Cork Marathon. Working with Ainle gives me the confidence to do so.

Describe one or two of the most important benefits you’ve received by training with Ainle.

One of the major benefits of working with Ainle was in getting a very specific program which related 1. to my specific sport and 2. to my specific injury problem and rehab needs. The encouragement to keep pursuing the program was and is still great also as when you’re injured its hard to keep the motivation high, especially when you’re used to training every day. Ainle with his own experience of injury rehab is able to empathise and use his own experience on how to keep the program going all the way through.

What are your first impressions of the facilities at the gym?

The facilities at the gym are great as you have pretty much everything you need to do the training you need to do. There is a good atmosphere there with everyone just working away on their own programme.

Do you feel that you got a service that is unique or hard to come by elsewhere by training with Ainle?

I feel Ainle’s program is unique because he gives a very specific program that it would be hard to get from most other personal trainers. With Ainle’s background he not only understands the exercises behind the training but he also understands the training principles. He is able to adapt exercises to your specific problem and apply the appropriate level of training. He is able to progress the training also at an appropriate rate so that you never get bored or you don’t plateau with the exercise level which you’re achieving.

2012-munster-half-marathon-champion-m-herlihy Would you recommend others to train here?

I would recommend anyone to train here as Ainle has a broad and deep knowledge which he can apply to any situation or training goal. Having worked with top sports professionals and coaches myself at the Australian Institute of Sport I can say with full confidence that Ainle is top class and has a comprehensive knowledge to help any athlete or sportsperson or even someone just looking to achieve modest personal fitness goals.

Is there anything you would like to add?

As a distance runner I know that some other runners would be put off by training with someone with a GAA background but because Ainle has done a number of sports himself and also has such a broad experience in dealing with different types of athletes, I would reassure athletes from any sport that Ainle’s knowledge is sufficient that he is able to adapt it to any person in any sport.

Iománaí óg ag Teacht arais ó chos briste

Thosaigh Robert ag traenáil liom tar éis dó a chos a ghortú go holc ag aois a dó dhéag agus é ag imirt peile.  Nuair a thosaigh  sé ag traenáil liomsa  bhí sé tar éís ocht mí a chaitheamh ag brath ar maidí croise.. Chuaigh sé i mbun oibre go dian díograsach agus ghlac sé páirt i gclár athshlánaithe a bhí curtha in oiriúnt go sáiniúil do.  Toradh na hoibre sin go léir – tá  sé anois i  mbarr a shláinte agus é ar ais ag imirt dá chumann agus dá chontae agus dá scoil.  Níor thuras éasca é  agus bhí an baol ann go gcaithfí  a chos a bhriseadh athuair leis an cnámh a athshrocrú. Faraor, bhí an t-ádh le Robert.  Mar thoradh ar  an gclár athshlánaithe agus de thairbhe an obair dhian, dhúshlánach a rinne Robert, ní raibh obráid eile de dhíth air.   Maith thú Robert!

“Ba le coir leighis a fháíl ar mo chos, ar tharla droch-bhriseadh do, a thosaigh mé ag traenáil le hÁinle an chéad uair riamh.  Bhí mo chos briste i ndá áít agam – an tibula agus an fibula.  An sprioc a  bhí  agam agus mé i mbun traenála ná súil gan na maidí croise.  Ba mhian liom freisin déanamh cinnte de nach mbéinn ag súil go bacach.  Bheith aclaí arís agus ar ais ag iomáint an sprioc eile a bhí agam.   Thug Ainle an-chuidiú dom i rith an ama. Bhí sé i gconaí ansin dom chomhairliú  agus ag tacú liom.  Bhí dearca báúil  agus spreagúil i gconaí ag Ainle agus muid i mbun traenála.

An tairbhe is mó a bhain mé as a bheith ag traenáil le hAinle ná bheith inán súil agus rith i gceart arís – go mór mór os  rud é go raibh mé ag brath ar an maidí croise nuair a thosaigh mé amach leis. Tá cabhail tréan agam anois mar thoradh ar an réimse leathan cleachtaí cabhlach a thaispeáin Ainle dom. Mothaím gur sholáthair Ainle seirbhís den scoth a bhí curtha in oiriúnt go sáiniúl don ghortú a bhí orm.  Sampla amháín den chóireáil sháiniúil seo ab ea an taifeadadh físe a rinne sé díom a thaispeáín cén cruth a bhí orm agus mé ag rith. Léirigh an taifeadadh seo na laigeachtaí a bhí le ceartú.  Comh maith le sin d’iarr sé ar theiripeoir fisiceach teacht isteach le cuidiú le m’athshlánú.  Mholfainn go mór do dhaoine eile dul ag treanáil le hAinle.  Bheadh sé deacair teacht ar sheirbhís dá leithéad  i sportlann ar bith eile – seirbhís atá uathúil, sáiniúil agus spreagúíl.”

Athraíonn máthair nósanna cothaithe agus aclaíochta ar mhaithe le slí beatha níos sláintiúla.

“Cara liom a mhol dom dul go hAinle.  An dá sprioc a bhí agam ná na droch nósanna itheacháin a bhí agam a athrú agus cur leis an aclaíocht a bhí ar bun agam.  D’éirigh liom an dá sprioc seo a bhaint amach. Bhí Ainle iontach mar thraenálaí agus mhothaigh mé go raibh mé ag tnúth leis an dreasanna traenála.  Tá i bhfad níos mó fuinnimh agam anois agus tá  nósanna itheacháin níos sláintiúla agam freisin.

Molaim do dhaoine eile dul ag traenáil le hAinle. Thug an tréimhse seo a chaith mé ag traenáil leis an-mhisneach dom. Thug sé an t-eolas dom a bhí riachtanach  le  tús a chur le ré úr maidir le nósanna itheacháin agus aclaíochta.  Tá na nósanna  nua seo á chleachtadh agam go fóill.”

Athshlánú iománaí/imreoir rugbaí tar éis dó a rúitín a bhriseadh

“Thosaigh mé ag traenáil le hAinle tar éis dom aischothú maith a chloisteáil ó  chéílí imeartha de mo chuid-se. Is  lúthchleasaithe iad seo a rinne traenáil le hAinle cheana féin. An sprioc a bhí agam ná na  matáin i mo chos a athneartú i ndiaidh dom ocht seachtaine a chaitheamh ar mhaidí croise mar thoradh ar bhriseadh ruitín.   Tar éis dom dreas dian oibre, a mhair sé seachtaine, a dhéanamh faoi stiúir Ainle san ionad traenála, bhí mé aclaí go leor le dul ar ais ag imirt.

Mhothaigh mé go raibh Ainle go hiomlán tiomanta agus meáite ar chuidiú liom mo chuid spriocanna a bhaint amach.  Chríochnaigh mé an plean athshlánaithe  a bhí leagaithe amach ag Ainle dom.  Thaispeáin sé dom na cleachtaithe éagsúla a bhí de dhíth orm  le codanna difriúla den chorp a neartú. Tá sé i gceist agam leanúint leis na cleachtaithe seo.

Molaim Ainle go láidir mar thraenáilí.  Cuireann sé séirbhís ar fail atá spreagúil agus a dhíríonn go sáiniúil ar do chás féin i dtimpeallacht atá compordach.   Maraon le sin, tá sé meáite go hiomlán ar chuidiú leat ó thaobh comhlíonadh do chuid spriocanna féin.”

Nóta buíochais ó chliant a fuair traenáil ar leith

Ba mhaith liom buíochas mór a ghabháil le hAinle Ó Cairealláin.  Chaith mé sé seachtaine ag traenáil le hAinle agus tá mé thar a bheith sásta leis an toradh.  Chaill mé dhá orlach déag  thart ar mo   choim! Mholfainn d’éinne atá ag iarraidh meachain a chailliúnt agus an matáin a theannadh dul ag traenáil le hAinle.  Tá sé thar barr ó thaobh cóitseála de agus chuir sé an-chomhairle orm maidir le mo  stíl bheatha a athrú.  Tá mé ag dúil go mór leis an gcéad sé seachtaine eile ag traenáil le hAinle Ó Cairealláin.

Iomaitheoir Miss Ireland i mbun traenála don chomortás.

ciara-allen “Thosaigh mé ag traenáil le hAinle agus mé ag díriú ar chomortas Miss Ireland. Bhí sé mar sprioc agam na matáin a theannadh agus mo réim bia a athrú.  D’éirigh liom an dá sprioc seo a bhaint amach.  Trí uaire sa tseachtain rinne mé dreas traenála le hAinle ag síneadh, ag déanamh cleachtaí éagsúla agus ag ardú meáchain.  Comh maith le sin thug sé comhairle dom maidir le réim bia agus mhol sé dom neart uisce a ól.

Bhí gach uile dreas tuirsiúil.  Ach sin ráite, mhothaigh mé níos dearfaí, níos sláintiúla agus níos aclaí ina dhiaidh.  Spreag Ainle mé a rith an ama agus cuireadh sé brú sa bhreis orm nuair a bhí sé de dhíth.  D’eagraigh Ainle na dreasanna traenála ag amanna a bhí in oiriúnt domsa, ag cur san aireamh go raibh mé ag obair.  Ní raibh aon dhá dhreas traenála mar an gcéanna.  Mar sin de, ní raibh me riamh dubh dóite!

Ba mhór an gar an comhairle cothaithe a fuair mé.  Mar thoradh ar  aiste bia a bhí níos sláintiúla bhí níos mó fuinnimh agam agus bhí sé níos fusa agam oibriú ar theannadh na matán.  Fuair mé leideanna fónta maidir le cleachtaithe agus sintí a d’fhéadfainn a dhéanamh go tapa sa bhaile an oíche  roimh shiútáil.  An tairbhe is mó a bhain mé as na dreasanna traenála ná gur bhain mé amach an sprioc a bhí os mo chomhair, sin na matáin a theannadh.”

Young GAA Player Rehabs Horrific Broken Leg After 8 Months on Crutches

Robert started training with me after seriously breaking his leg in a football match at the age of 12. At the time that Robert started training, he had already spent 8 months on crutches, and was not showing much sign of getting off them. Through his own sheer dedication, perseverance, motivation to get back on the field, and a well planned rehab program, he has managed a full recovery, and is now back playing with club, school, and county! Robert’s rehab was by no means straight forward, and there were bumps along the way, including the possibility of having his leg rebroken to set the bone again. Fortunately, through all his hard work he avoided having another operation on the leg, and overcame the challenges that confronted him. Maith thú Rob!

“I started training with Ainle to recover from a serious leg injury (broken tibia and fibula). My training goals were to walk without crutches or a limp, and eventually to return to full fitness and get back playing hurling. Ainle was very helpful, and always gave me his best advice, like he was putting as much interest in me as himself. There was always a friendly training atmosphere, with plenty of encouragement, and no pressure to show off.

“The most important benefits that I achieved by training with Ainle were to walk and run properly as I was on crutches when I first started training with Ainle. I have developed a strong core because of the wide range of core exercises Ainle showed me.

I feel that I got a service that was unique as Ainle would take video recordings of me running in slow motion. He also brought a physical therapist in to help with my rehab, as well as coming up with many unique methods to help me recover from my injury.

I would recommend others to train with Ainle as you would be hard pushed to find a gym with more interest in you anywhere else. “

Hurler/ Rugby Player Recovers from Broken Ankle

“I started training with Ainle as I had received positive feedback from teammates who underwent gym programs with Ainle. My goal was to wanted to rebuild my leg muscles following 8 weeks on crutches suffering from a broken ankle. I returned to match fitness within 6 weeks of intense gym work with Ainle.

I felt Ainle was dedicated and determined to help me fulfill my goals.  My rehab went exactly to plan, I learned how to work on all different parts of my body and will use all of these exercises in the future.

I would recommend others to train with Ainle because it’s a small personal gym with a comfortable relaxed yet motivating environment where I get Ainle’s full attention.”

Miss Ireland Contestant Trains For Contest

ciara-allen “I started training with Ainle to tone up for Miss Ireland 2012 and to change my diet.   I achieved these goals through working out with Ainle in the gym three times a week doing various stretches, exercises and weight lifting, as well as eating healthier and drinking plenty of water.

Each session was tiring however I felt more positive, healthier and fitter after each one. I got great encouragement from Ainle throughout out each session and was constantly pushed to work when I wasn’t, the training sessions were flexible so we were able to work around my work schedule. Each session was different so I wasn’t getting bored.

The nutrition advice really benefited me as well. By eating healthier I had more energy and found it a lot easier to tone up.   I also got some good tips on some quick exercises and stretches I could do at home the night before a shoot. The main benefit was that after the training sessions I had achieved what I had set out to do, tone up.

I would recommend Ainle as he has been so helpful through out the training sessions. He gave non-stop encouragement and advice on how to do better, he had a great system for monitoring my diet to ensure I was eating the right foods. Ainle was also flexible with his time and accommodating to my schedule. He varied each session so it wouldn’t get boring and had certain exercises, which I did so I could see how I was improving each week.”

Weightloss Client Changes Exercise and Eating Habits to Drop to a Healthy Weight

“My training goals were to improve my everyday health and achieve a fitness level appropriate to my age. I have achieved these goals and feel very good after my training sessions. My favourite thing about training with Ainle is the general encouragement to adopt a change in both eating and exercise activities. The most positive benefits that I have received include a change in my eating habits, and the desire to exercise on a regular basis. I would recommend Ainle to others like myself because he encourages and gets progress in a likeable way.”

Hurler gets to 10% Bodyfat and Gains in Strength and Power

“Ainle is a top class personal trainer. His conditioning workouts are particularly exceptional. What makes me the happiest is the strength I’ve gained since beginning training with Ainle. I feel very fit and in good condition. I have become a lot leaner (down to 10% body fat). I have gained strength and power in the legs, and can now perform more chin ups. After Ainle’s training sessions, I feel absolutely ripped! I have also learned how to recover after training and what the best foods are to eat.”
